Storm Legion: Storm Breaker Protocol - Vellion the Pestilent

Storm Legion beta weekend 2 is over and so is the NDA!  Here's an awesome video showcasing a boss fight in the new level 54 dungeon called, Storm Breaker Protocol.  We called it!  They are definitely making usage of that new jump feature we first saw appear in the Maelforge fight and again in the Volan reveal video.  Storm Legion is shaping up to practically be a brand new mmorpg in and of itself!

Check out the video below and thanks to YouTube user Seatin Rift for uploading and sharing this with all of us.

Overcast Minisode Episode 1: Fundamentals Of A Class

Hey Overcast fans! We've got a little treat for you today. It's not much but we wanted to say hi and see what everyone thinks about patch 1.11. In this first episode of a probable series of "minisodes" Matt is solo and seeking to spark a little discussion about what makes a soul or a combination of souls interesting and fun. With all the changes across the board to the souls in 1.11, Matt got to thinking about this fairly in-depth. Have a listen, enjoy and leave us a comment below, email, facebook, or tweet with what you think about the topic!

Discontinuation Notice for iTunes Audience

I've decided to get on the mic and personally say farewell to our audience. Those who frequent our website or the forums already know everything contained in this recording but we wanted to be sure our audience on itunes and stitcher radio were aware of the situation as well. Also wanted to bring attention to my (Matt's) personal TwitchTV channel, in-case anyone feels like stopping in to say hello and see what we're up to, now that the show is over.

Overcast Shutting Down

Hey Overcast fans. Matt here to clarify a few things. I've been wanting to post about the status of the show for some time now but wanted to wait until I knew for sure what was going to happen. Sorry that it took us so long to give you an official update.

So, to clarify, we have decided to stop the show due to personal reasons. More specifically, I myself do not have the time or energy to spend playing RIFT anymore. Obviously we can't build you a quality show without spending a good amount of time playing the game itself. Real life has given me a swift boot in the rear and since then my focus has to shift onto other real life matters. Also, our decision to discontinue Overcast was in no way affected by any of the reactions to episode 25.

Thank you so much for your support of the show. We loved doing it for everyone and want to be able to continue it in the future. The show is however currently discontinued indefinitely. We may return for Storm Legion but if we don't, we want to wish everyone the best of luck and lots of fun with the expansion.

Thank you again for being an awesome audience!

-Matt (Lead Host, RIFT Overcast)

Episode 25 [Community Voice]: Going Hard

Community Voice guests Khan & Myrkel, from US guild No Quarter, join us this week to discuss a wide array of topics including patch 1.10, dimensions, the support role in Storm Legion, and much more.  Elrar was lurking in the chatroom and tossed us a couple of crumbs as well.  Later on, our guests give us some insight into their guild and what its like to be a part of No Quarter.  We discover a little about what happened with the recent exploiting that lead to some controversy regarding credit for the Maelforge world first kill.  And most importantly, we're on a boat!  Don't worry, you'll understand.

Episode 24: Potatomancer Revealed

What a jam-packed episode we have for you all this week! There's so much that we were live for almost 2 hours and had to stop ourselves from talking even more! Khel joins Matt & Joe again this week as we discuss the latest news regarding patch 1.10, Rift's newest mount is a tad to 'cheeky', the almost complete removal of factions on pve servers, and Trion's newest 'experiment' with normalizing gear stats for instanced pvp. We've also pulled several juicy tooltips from Trion's revealing of the new mage soul, the Harbinger, which we discuss in great depth! Everything is better with sprinkles, especially this week's episode of Overcast.

Landslide Mount Rated M for Mature!

The Landslide mount looks awesome and can be acquired by purchasing the $119.99 1 year prepaid game-time deal, which also comes with a copy of RIFT: Storm Legion.  As cool as this mount is, many players have been put off by Landslide's rather... er... defined rear-end.  Thankfully, Elrar has posted a screenshot showing a solution to this odd complaint.  Landslide now has a tail, sort of.  It is a tail right?  Well, looks good enough for us here at Overcast but some players are being quite picky about it.  Trion can't make everyone happy!  If it still bothers you, I think you should roam Telara with your camera panned around to a frontal view.  Maybe a diaper would make people happy?  *shrug*

PvP Stat Normalization PTS TEST Aug 14

The concept of a "gear treadmill" or a "gear grind" is an old one that a vast majority of mmorpgs have adopted over the years.  The question in many player's mind is often; if there is no gear grind, than what is my incentive to play?  This is a question that stems from years of mmo players being used to their characters constantly growing in power.  While there are other aspects of RIFT, and numerous other games that many players enjoy, gear progression has always been a staple aspect of the genre.

Players who participate in the PvP in RIFT, however, have felt the grind much more heavily than in other games.  One could argue the impact of a gear grind, within other titles, depending on their own personal experience but veterans of RIFT know exactly what we're talking about.  The PvP in RIFT has, for many players, been extremely enjoyable because of the versatility of the soul system.  Unfortunately, this versatility has long been overshadowed by the gear grind.  Over a year has passed since RIFT's initial release back in March 2011.  As expected, players have developed several "cookie-cutter" soul builds that have become the norm for many.  The development of cookie-cutter builds is bound to happen in any mmorpg but for RIFT, this means the attraction of the soul system has faded even further into the back of many player's minds.  So what happens when you take away the attraction of a versatile cross-class system like souls?  You're left with one thing, your gear vs your opponent's gear.

Episode 23: The Geomancer

Expectations are extremely high for the expansion!  With the reveal of the new Mage soul right around the corner, Matt & Joe discuss some specifics about what it will be.  Recent screenshots and images have shown a Mage wielding a two-handed sword!  Is it a tank, a melee dps, or is Trion just messing with us?  Your hosts have abandoned the Vigil and are now firmly seated in the ranks of the Defiant!  Matt returns to the Mage and Joe picks up where he left off on his original Warrior.  Find out what prompted our decision to swap factions and why Joe is suddenly interested in the Warrior once again.  Oh, and did we mention the Geomancer?!

Episode 22 [Community Voice]: Endless Possibilities

This week, Matt & Joe analyze the recent Reddit AMAA (ask me almost anything). With SWTOR's recent announcement that they're switching to a "freemium" or free-to-play model, several sites have inspired discussion about which subscription MMORPG could be the next to adopt F2P. We discuss how RIFT seemingly dodged the bullet, as many players commented on RIFT's success as a subscription model. What are the benefits of F2P and will RIFT ever consider it as an option? Later on we're joined by our Community Voice guest, Juuno from the popular podcast, Rift Shinies to discuss the most recent revelations in Telaran lore and the endless possibilities for where the story could go in the future.

Episode 21: Face-Off

Matt & Joe are back, along with Khellendros, this week. We discuss if Guild Wars 2 could have an impact on RIFT subscriptions and if this week's Play-RIFT-Free promotion could be a direct response to the most recent GW2 beta weekend. Can we go at least one episode without mentioning Conquest? It's possible but not this week. We revisit our feelings regarding the most recent changes to the Conquest reward system and touch on some ideas for balancing PvP stats, such as crit and avoidance. Also, this week, what ever happened to those awesome World Events we used to look forward to?

Episode 20 [Community Voice]: Conquest... Again?

This, our second week of live recording, we are joined by Amanatin & Betowulf of US Guild, Tabula Rasa.  We get to know Tabula Rasa and move on to discuss Conquest... again.  We want to say this is the last time we'll have to discuss Conquest but the feature appears to be ever changing.  Are the latest changes to PvE focused?  Trion also confirms that there will be no rollback.  The controversy surrounding Conquest leads to even deeper discussion about RIFT PvP and the state of the game.

This week we discuss: the latest issues plaguing Conquest, the EU server merge and if we could see one for US soon, review the newest Instant Adventures, reinforce our request for an in-game help index of sorts, and discuss the pros and cons to an Armory (player database) feature.  Also, Joe has chosen to get involved in PvP and talks about his experiences thus far.  Much to Matt's surprise, Joe is greatly enjoying instanced PvP.  This week is also our first time recording live on twitch.tv/riftovercast.  Future recordings will also be live so be sure to follow the twitch.tv channel and our Twitter for updates on the live schedules!

Episode 18: The Hedge Mage

Many Telarans rejoice for Patch 1.9 & Summerfest hitting the live servers this week but some aren't so joyous and we'll discuss why. Joe experiences some classic open world PvP. Wait, did I say PvP? I meant getting ganked and camped. We remind ourselves about some of RIFT's original hooks at launch and Joe discovers a new class called "The Hedge Mage". What exactly is a Hedge Mage anyway? Find out, in this week's Overcast!

Overcast Haunts Docsauce's Twitch Stream

Roughly an hour or so prior to Docsauce ending his nightly livestream, at twitch.tv/docsauce, Matt mentioned he found the dark room behind Doc a bit eerie.  Matt explained that he thought something might be watching Doc while he streams.  Seems obvious right?

Just minutes before Docsauce ended the stream, Matt decided to share with him a "screenshot" of what he meant by his previous line.  All Matt said was, "Doc I want to show you something real quick, so that you know I wasn't joking earlier." and then linked him the "screenshot".

Didn't expect and couldn't have hoped for such a great reaction.  Thanks for being so awesome, Doc!

Episode 17: The Search Has Begun... Again

Another relatively quiet week for news, though not so quiet on the forums.  Matt & Joe begin the search for a raiding guild, again. Trion shows off their new Twitch channel by showcasing Patch 1.9, the population calls for server merges and we discuss how that could effect expansion sales, Conquest will arrive on live servers along with patch 1.9 next week but was it ready? Plus, isn't it sort of wrong for a Dwarf to be bald and clean-shaven?

RIFT: Storm Legion - Expansion

We've speculated, we've hoped, and we've received.  It's official, RIFT's first expansion will be released Fall 2012 and is named RIFT: Storm Legion.

This expansion will include:
  • 3 New Raids (Including Crucia, The Dragon of Air)
  • 2 New Continents (3x the size of the current world)
  • 7 New 5 Man Dungeons
  • Level Cap Increased to 60!
  • 4 New Souls (1 per calling)
  • "Dimensions" (Player/Guild Housing)
  • Tempest Bay (Shared Faction City)
  • 1 New Chronicle
  • A Brand New Bestiary (brand new creatures)
  • New Gear Slot - Capes!
  • New Crafting Tier, "Grand Master"
  • Colossus (100x the size of a player and interacts with terrain in a revolutionary way) (will be showcased at E3 2012)
  • ...and more yet to be announced!

For now, enjoy this sweet new trailer depicting Crucia leading her Storm Legion.  What is so critically important I wonder about the "Infinite Gate"?  Could this be the method we use to transcend the realm of Telara and assault the planes themselves?

RIFT Overcast Wallpaper - Stillmoor

I love to experiment with photo editing.  So much so that I was one of those dudes who ran a signature request style thread on a couple of forums for a while.  It's a lot of fun and so I couldn't resist turning this awesome screenshot of Stillmoor and adding in our characters and some effects to enhance the feel.  I'm quite happy with the results and wanted to share this with our fans.

Got any suggestions for good photo ops? Let us know in the comments below!  Also feel free to send us some scenic screenshots of your favorite areas of Telara and we might just turn it into our next wallpaper!  Enjoy!

Welcome To "Conquest"!

Realm vs Realm Comes to RIFT!
That's right!  Our cries have been heard and will be heard again on Thursday, May 17, 2012 @ 4:00pm PDT, as we march on both our enemies.  Choose from one of three new factions, unique to Conquest: Ram, Lion, or Raven.  Each faction will stand on its own and have to overthrow the others in true three faction Realm vs Realm PvP combat!

Check out the Official Announcement on Rift's blog.  Matt has also ninja'ed Joe online for a short time to capture our initial reactions to this announcement, so be sure to have a listen!  As a result of this announcement, we've decided to delay Overcast Episode 12 until Saturday.  This will give us time to test the new Conquest feature as much as possible.

Make sure you all update your PTS client early!  This is going to be epic!

The Elusive Episode 7

Hey guys and gals,  Matt here to give you a quick update.  We're having issues with the sound quality on Episode 7 and it is taking extra long to edit this one into something usable.  Once finished editing, the episode should sound just fine but some real life stuff is cutting into the editing time.  Haven't been on Rift since Wednesday, put it that way.  I promise I'm using all my free time to get this episode to you all asap.  I have some things to do this afternoon but when I get back home I will be non-stop editing until it is finished.  We'll have this stubborn episode up for you tomorrow for sure.

Be sure you follow us on Twitter or click on the Twitter link in the navigation bar at the top of the blog for all future updates as I'd prefer not to clutter the blog with these sorts of things.  Wanted to be sure anyone wondering where Ep7 was would get to see this though.

Evolution of the Community

The MMORPG genre has been around for a very long time.  Depending on where you personally credit the genre's beginning, we're talking about at least 13 years.  I personally credit a game which I've found most mmo players these days never even knew about, Meridian 59, which would date the mmorpg as far back as 1995!  Since then more and more game developers have caught on to the potential of this genre and began to innovate and dare I use the term, copy their way into the market. As the genre's community of players grew almost exponentially over the years, the developers have been able to open communications with their players and learn what they like and what they don't.

Question A Developer

Overcast has been recently recognized as an official RIFT fansite, yay!  As such, we may have the opportunity and the privilege of having a developer on the show.  The team over at Trion really shows that they not only care and appreciate their players but that they want to interact with them.  Ever since release Trion has consistently built up and maintained a reputation for being the most transparent game developer in the market today.

There is no date yet for when this may happen but we at Overcast wanted to give our listeners the chance to help us build a list of questions for the developers that we can send to Trion in preparation for a special Community Voice - Developer episode.  Not every question may get answered but the better the question the more likely we'll get a good answer.  To send us your question for the developers, contact us using any of the methods listed below, or simply leave us a comment here on this post.

Until then, enjoy the Carnival of the Ascended and we'll see you all again March 23rd!

Today we touch on the new world event, "Carnival of the Ascended", some upcoming changes to the Riftstalker, accessibility of raid content, Infernal Dawn looks like it will be a new tier, and more!  Plus that special bonus after the closing sequence!  Enjoy!

Episode 3 - Wife Aggro

With Cameron still out sick, Joe and Matt duo-host once again. In this week's episode we share an exciting announcement for the show and shed some tears for the death of the Support role as well as brainstorm how to bring it back to 5 man dungeons. The community's distaste for the Mercenary system seems to have increased. Some players have even boycotted the system apparently! Also, our characters are quickly acquiring better and better gear, bringing us that much closer to Master Modes. All two of them. Wait, there's only two? Doh!

Episode 2: High Elf Flatulence

In this week's episode of RIFT Overcast we're unfortunately short one host, as Cameron is sick this week. Joe and Matt cover some personal and player concerns with PvP and ease of access to the new merged-tier-experts. Later on, we get to speculating a little about the upcoming 20 man raid, Infernal Dawn, and the suspected changes to the Cleric soul of Druid. Wonder when Elementalist will get a rework? Shapeshifters anyone? Joe also seems to have a theory about the High Elf healing animation. So kick back, relax, and enjoy the show. Oh, and don't forget the air freshener.
